Beacon of Hope Crisis Center Internship

I was an Criminal Justice Intern at Beacon of Hope Crisis Center from January to May of 2025. This internship was fully remote, with a time commitment of eight hours a week. During this time, I completed training regarding domestic violence and sexual assault, advocacy, as well as stalking. I also completed customized housing and employment searches for advocates of this organization to send to their clients. I was also lucky enough to shadow advocates throughout their time at work. This allowed me to learn a lot about advocacy work and the legal aspect of community involvement. I was able to learn and expand on many of my skills by being an intern at this organization. I learned what many may consider soft skills within this role. However, this was what was so important about advocacy in this capacity. The clients reaching out to this organization are often at an all time low, experiencing some of the most devastating things a person can experience. Learning to effectively communicate, to provide support, and to guide someone through a crisis are skills many struggle to learn. I also learned many technical skills such as research, graphic creation, and content creation. At the conclusion of my time as an intern at this nonprofit organization, I was lucky enough to be recommended for a full time payed position by my direct supervisors and later worked for this organization as a professional.

My role as a Criminal Justice Intern at Beacon of Hope Crisis Center included responsibilties such as:

  • Completing and compiling customized housing and employment searches for clients.

  • Creating graphics, content, and blog posts for my supervisor to use for social media or official website purposes.

  • Attending trainings, shadowing calls and protection order filings.

  • Meeting with other interns as well as staff to discuss work as well as foster collaboration and team work.

Why a Criminal Justice Internship as a Public Health Major?

I feel that this is a very important question to address, as this is a bit confusing for many. I went into applying for this internship looking at domestic violence as a public health issue. Domestic violence and interpersonal violence is an often underdiscussed and underaddressed public health issue due to its overall impact on the individual and society. I felt it was extremely important to learn more about this topic and work in this field to be able to understand the true scope of the issue and its impact on the community. This internship was deeply impactful as a public health major, as it provided key insights into the subject as well as the opportunity for tailored research, grant understanding, and advocacy experience
